Pigs feet in Jello. German Strudels. Pickled Watermelon. Fruitcake. Pfeffernusse. Are any of these delicacies served at your Christmas meal?
Michael Miller, Fargo, ND, can tell you almost everything and anything about the Christmas season in the Germans From Russia (GFR) culture in North Dakota.
In the 1950s, as a child growing up in the GFR community of Strasburg, ND, Michael also reflects on singing "Stille Nacht" at midnight mass and preparing for Sinterklaas who traveled from farm to farm not in a sleigh pulled by reindeer but in a horse-drawn sleigh.
By the way, Sinterklaas might have treated himself to "Red Eye" prior to sleighing through the frigid cold and snowy drifts of the Peace Garden State!
