Deb Pullen VanAuken, Waterloo, IA, is a died-in-the-wool livestock exhibitor, idea gatherer, and president of the National Cattle Congress Fair, Waterloo.
"Cattle Congress" is a well-known attraction which began as the State Dairy Show in the early 1900s when dairy cattle from the East Coast arrived into the city by rail. Folks flocked to the rail yard, standing spellbound as the magnificent cattle were unloaded and then proceeded to the fairgrounds for exhibition.
Headline entertainment such as Bob Hope, The Lennon Sisters, the Lawrence Welk Show, and Charley Pride brought in fair goers by the hundreds in the mid 20th century.
Deb shares with North Dakota's The Pfeiffer Sisters about the metamorphosis of this event into the 21st century and the food--especially the mouth-watering "fair food," which still tempts the taste buds of fair goers.
