"My technique was to listen," notes popular ag journalist (now retired) Dean Houghton, Polo, MO.
Born in the later 1950s, Dean's agrarian lifestyle and personality was the perfect combination which suited him well as an interviewer deluxe, capturing stories for various national farm magazines.
He warmly chats with North Dakota's The Pfeiffer Sisters about his first interview as a college student. With no camera of his own, one was provided, and with courage, he set out to interview former Ohio State football coach Woody Hays, keynote speaker at the Missouri State FFA Convention.
Dean's story is one of not only being in the right place at the right time but of the value of the effective art of listening in order to humbly learn the stories others tell.
